Hama. Syrian law enforcement agencies have detected a hidden cache of small arms and ammunition in the outskirts of the town of Hama. The secret stockpile was stowed away by Al-Nusra Front terrorists in the double wall partitioning of a dwelling house, situated on the road between Hama and Halab towns. Among the stowed away items were Czechoslovak-manufactured Sa-25 9mm submachine guns, ammunition, hand grenades, ready-to-be-used landmines, sophisticated communications devices, and other military equipment. Investigation is underway.

Aleppo. Syrian army special units have continued their vigorous checkup procedures in the previously freed areas. A stockpile of improvised explosive devices and a landmine workshop were discovered in strategic town of Sfera – which had come under control of the Syrian army troops shortly before that – situated on the highway between Damascus and Aleppo.

Despite their heavily fortified area defense positions and their frantic resistance, the terrorists had been driven out of that small town and its immediate neighborhoods which made it possible to secure vital supply routes to the town and the province of Aleppo.

Deir ez-Zor. Counterterrorism operations have continued in the province of Deir ez-Zor. Syrian army troops have liberated Al-Rizia district. One of the Al-Nusra Front-affiliated terrorist group – Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham – had taken heavy losses. This terrorist group was formed last spring by allying forces of several separate groups: Islamic State of Iraq (Al-Qaeda bands in Iraq) and Al-Nusra Front terrorists, operating in Syria.

A large number of foreign mercenaries had been killed. Among the dead, a famous terrorist field leader Abu Hamza was identified. It has been mentioned that continuous squabbles take place within the terrorist groups. As a result of one of such infighting, a field leader Abdel al-Salam al-Tawbah was killed several days ago. He was commander of a predominantly mercenary battalion and enjoyed great support in Qatar and Turkey.

Damascus. An increasing number of Syrian citizens, who had become members of Al-Nusra Front bands, used Syrian President Bashar Assad-declared general amnesty as an opportunity to save their lives. Another group of young people, who had earlier been drawn in terrorist activities by trick or force, will return to their families, after following through a special investigation routine and signing pledge papers.

Homs. Syria law enforcement has reported that several SUVs and trucks, transporting weapons and ammunition, have been arrested in the province of Homs. The drivers are in custody. Investigation is underway.

Damascus province. Syrian army has completed security operations in recently liberated Htaitit al-Turkman neighborhood near Damascus International Airport. It was mentioned that despite their desperate resistance in heavily fortified defense positions, Al-Nusra Front bandits had taken considerable losses and were ousted from that area. Highway traffic to Damascus International Airport has become increasingly secure, as another potential threat has been removed to that viable transit route.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement activists have helped evacuate more than 500 civilians from Muhadamia area in Damascus province, which is still under control of Al-Nusra Front militants. The evacuees did not wish to stay in the Islamist-controlled areas and sought refuge from killings in neighboring regions. Earlier, National Reconciliation Committee had assisted in repatriation of and provided humanitarian aid to more than 2000 people from that same area. Syrian authorities give all necessary support and assistance in providing shelter and food supplies to the refugees.

Idlib. Syrian army continued to play major role in providing security in the recently freed areas of Idlib province – including its most important facilities and townships – making sure that peace and stability are fully enjoyed by the Syrian people there. In order to prevent any sudden attack by Al-Nusra Front terrorists, Syrian army leadership decided to take under its full control Arbe’in Mountain, overseeing that area, and all nearby territories. A small SAA unit is currently stationed on the mountain top.

Syria Update: Battle for Jobar School Compound

Syria Update: Battle for Jobar School Compound.

A Duel between Tank and Grenade Launcher-Toting Militant (Part 2)

(Transcreation)

This is the continued story of a battle for a school compound in Jobar area of Damascus province in Syria between the Syrian army troops, supported by armor, and the militants, who had occupied the office blocks and the nearby residential buildings for quite a while.

After the Syrian tanks had killed a terrorist with an RPG grenade launcher inside one of the buildings and destroyed a number of other firing points, the militants’ fire density still did not decrease. The office blocks of this school compound were connected to the nearby three- and four-storied buildings by underground passageways. The militants would occasionally hide themselves in those tunnels or temporarily retreat inside the buildings. All the ground structures around there had been turned into one strongpoint with heavily fortified defense area positions.

Syrian tanks and infantry fighting vehicles kept looking out for possible movement inside the buildings. Infantry fighting vehicles engaged every spotted target. The tanks were swapping their positions. One tank – with our friend Hussein in it – moved out to cover the troops. He had a sudden idea to try to approach the enemy positions’ flank and to strike upon the presumed location of a tunnel entrance nearby one of the residential buildings.

After commanding officer had approved his initiative, Hussein – along with his crewmembers –steered their battle tank around the school compound in order to strike the militants’ positions from the flank, where several residential buildings were adjacent to the office blocks of the school compound. Three more tanks joined them to support their initiative shortly.

The tank then would fire and immediately roll back for cover. Straight ahead of the firing positions of the tanks, as well as to the left of them, there were militants’ positions, situated about 50 meters away from the tanks.

All those buildings were linked together into one fortified defense area. Like anywhere in Jobar neighborhood, that area had many underground passageways, interconnecting the basements of the buildings there.

Having finished engaging their targets, the tanks returned to their original positions. Meanwhile, Syrian infantrymen were entering to secure the office block Two. In this particular situation, the most difficult thing for the Syrian soldiers was to traverse the first five meters of advancing into the building. If at least one terrorist sniper had been overlooked before the beginning of this operation, someone of them would have been bound to be hit.

A militant observer had been seen on the local water tower. Shortly afterward, a fire strike followed and the terrorists became one spotter less.

Syrian army units, which had already taken the office block One, were engaging the militants there and simultaneously providing cover to the advancing troops. The dust rising from behind the office block could be seen, attesting to the firepower density.

The crewmembers of the fighting infantry vehicles had found how to solve the problem of the poor visibility at the end of the corridor that was linking the two school buildings. In order to disrupt the militants’ defense positions and block their communications routes, as well as to provide armor cover to the infantrymen, who were at that moment securing other buildings behind it, the fighting infantry vehicle storms inside the building and enters the corridor thus taking its perimeter under control.

SAA troops had secured and taken under control three office blocks inside this school compound. This operation has led to the militants’ defense positions having been separated into several isolated segments. Ammunition supply routes to the enclosed terrorist group have been disrupted. Militant reinforcements now start taking losses even as they approach this defense area. This new situation has deprived militants’ area defense positions in Jobar of their previous status of a strongpoint, designed to transition their area defense to an offensive against the central areas of Damascus.

Syria Update: Destroying Terrorist Underground Passage

We have visited the town of Dariya near the capital city of Damascus today. Syrian army has destroyed another underground tunnel, dug out by the militants here. We have followed the path along which the terrorists had withdrawn from their previous defense positions.

All the way through this residential area, we have witnessed the scenes of war devastation everywhere around us, as we were walking through somebody’s bedrooms, children rooms, and living rooms. Home gardens, that must have taken years to grow, were dying without husbandry.

Finally, we reached the spot where the militants had dug out a tunnel, leading towards the nearby highway. According to our guide, a Syrian army officer, Syrian soldiers had initially tried to ambush the terrorists at the entrance of this underground passageway on this side and bring them into custody. Several days had been spent in wait, but the militants were too careful to come out. Then, the Syrian soldiers brought in a bulldozer and started plowing the tunnel up in order to close its entrance. At that moment, the militants opened frantic fire upon them, trying to disrupt their works. They fired more than 30 mortars at the Syrian army troops – who had been busy closing the tunnel – but it did not help the terrorists.

According to the Syrian army officer, the tunnel had a strategic significance to the militants. This area was swarming with terrorists, many of whom had been killed. They intended to establish a munitions supply through here and if needs be use this part of the underground passage as their escape route.

The passageway was 300 meters long, 10 meters deep, and one meter wide and its ceiling was 1.5 meters high. It was equipped with electricity lights, ventilation, storage rooms, and earthworks equipment.

Every twenty meters of the tunnel’s length, the terrorists inside the tunnel made a shaft up to the surface in order to check out their location, using a camera to look around. Finally, once when the militants were retracting their camera back into the tunnel, the Syrian troops dropped a bomb in there. The terrorists’ cries underground had been heard for a long time, afterwards. Shortly after that, the soldiers dug the tunnel’s entrance open again and subsequently went in and secured the whole of the underground passageway.

After securing the tunnel, the Syrian army detonated it. According to the officer, that was not the first such tunnel around there and surely, it was not the last one.

One of the walls inside a nearby dwelling house, previously used by the militants as their defense structure, was interspersed with handwritings by various terrorists, who probably wanted to remain remembered in this place and turned it into some sorts of a hall of fame of theirs. By looking at those scribbles, one could tell that those militants came from such places as Homs, Kallas, and Al-Sham in Syria, as well as from various places in Libya, Lebanon, Tunis, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, belonging to various militant groups, ranging from “Battalions of the grandchildren of Muhammad” to “Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham”.

A little further, not far from this improvised front line, there were the militants sitting somewhere over there. It was about a 200-meter distance to the militants’ positions from here. Both sides at that moment were fighting by using their sniper power only.

The tighter was the grip around them, the more often the militants had made attempts to break through moving in this direction. They would set fire to one place and make a run at another, according to the officer. The terrorists are said to be especially proficient at using sniper rifles manufactured in the US, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The Syrian Army officer said: “We are sure that our blood we shed is not for nothing. The victory will be ours. We get our strength from our mothers and from our people. The strength of the Army comes from the strength of the people. We make sure to follow all directions of our leadership and we will be true to our oaths. Motherland! Honor! Loyalty!
