The Story of Unjust Stewart

“And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he
had done wisely: for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser
than the sons of the light.
And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends by means of
the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when it shall fail, they may receive you
into the eternal tabernacles.” (Luk 16:8-9)

This story, if it happened to anybody else, would certainly find
a place in one of the segments of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, who is known
to be keen on drawing our attention to life’s irony.

What has happened to Jon Stewart lately? Yes, he is going to
leave soon. But why have his show has changed the tone so drastically? It has
become less caustic and more pliable! The jokes seem to have faded in their
scathing criticism of the vile world outside the Daily Show studio. Jon has
become less critical of the outer world and more agreeable toward the people he
used to crush before. Even the Fox News guys are now ridiculed by Jon in terms
that seem to be more friendly than usual. Well, apparently, the end is near!

Not that Jon has grown old. However, weeks before his
departure from the Daily Show, Jon Stewart seems to have decided to dedicate the
remainder of his stay there to making new friends and cajole to his old ones in
high places by following a markedly politically correct line. His signature
takes on the most recent rants and stupidities of the mainstream media are
still there. Nevertheless, his choice of major topics and his guests has been
somewhat disappointing these days.

First, the guests are no longer interviewed the way they
used to be. Jon has become soft on them. Almost solicitous. The choice of guests
in itself is scandalous for a comedian of his character. Let alone the pandering
style of interviewing them. All those well-connected Hollywood celebrities-and-comedians-turned-writers-and–screenwriters,
the entertainers-turned-politicians, the former presidents who seem to have
never quite acknowledged the fact that they are not any longer, and the mediocre
but comedy-related filmmakers who are more acknowledged for their progressive
political activism and connections than their art works. Wise choice of guests,
Jon! Wise choice of words while interviewing them, too!

One can only admire the way Jon is conducting his
interviews. Although, knowing him from his 16 years of doing it the way only he
used to do it, one cannot help feeling somewhat disappointed! Whereas, by looking
at what kind of guests he has been inviting recently, one could tell what kind
of career turn Jon seems to be planning for himself upon retiring from Comedy
Central. Well, the end is near, indeed! In such an epic situation, what else do
you expect from a wise Jew? It is a wise turn! Good luck, Jon! Keep making
friends! In the cruel world out there, you might well need them.
