Damascus has been continually battered by frequent blasts, most of them caused by mortar attacks. This midday, two mortar shells slammed into a crowded area at the heart of the Syrian capital. At least two people were killed instantly in the blast and a dozen were wounded.
According to various reports, from two to eight people, including two women, were killed and 50 wounded when the twin mortars hit Hijaz square in downtown Damascus, landing at the entrance to the Hijaz railroad company. Among the injured, were also several train station maintenance workers.
