Syria Update: Latest Events
03 November 2013

Hama. Syrian law enforcement agencies have detected a hidden cache of small arms and ammunition in the outskirts of the town of Hama. The secret stockpile was stowed away by Al-Nusra Front terrorists in the double wall partitioning of a dwelling house, situated on the road between Hama and Halab towns. Among the stowed away items were Czechoslovak-manufactured Sa-25 9mm submachine guns, ammunition, hand grenades, ready-to-be-used landmines, sophisticated communications devices, and other military equipment. Investigation is underway.

Aleppo. Syrian army special units have continued their vigorous checkup procedures in the previously freed areas. A stockpile of improvised explosive devices and a landmine workshop were discovered in strategic town of Sfera – which had come under control of the Syrian army troops shortly before that – situated on the highway between Damascus and Aleppo.

Despite their heavily fortified area defense positions and their frantic resistance, the terrorists had been driven out of that small town and its immediate neighborhoods which made it possible to secure vital supply routes to the town and the province of Aleppo.

Deir ez-Zor. Counterterrorism operations have continued in the province of Deir ez-Zor. Syrian army troops have liberated Al-Rizia district. One of the Al-Nusra Front-affiliated terrorist group – Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham – had taken heavy losses. This terrorist group was formed last spring by allying forces of several separate groups: Islamic State of Iraq (Al-Qaeda bands in Iraq) and Al-Nusra Front terrorists, operating in Syria.

A large number of foreign mercenaries had been killed. Among the dead, a famous terrorist field leader Abu Hamza was identified. It has been mentioned that continuous squabbles take place within the terrorist groups. As a result of one of such infighting, a field leader Abdel al-Salam al-Tawbah was killed several days ago. He was commander of a predominantly mercenary battalion and enjoyed great support in Qatar and Turkey.

Damascus. An increasing number of Syrian citizens, who had become members of Al-Nusra Front bands, used Syrian President Bashar Assad-declared general amnesty as an opportunity to save their lives. Another group of young people, who had earlier been drawn in terrorist activities by trick or force, will return to their families, after following through a special investigation routine and signing pledge papers.
